I recently updated our master bedroom. We doubled our livable space by rearranging our pieces. And of course, we needed (yes, needed) some new things. So under the recommendation of my creatively skilled decorator, we went to work…
We have a huge sleigh bed that we purchased years ago that can overpower the room. I needed something to hold it’s own on either side of the bed. I purchased 2 mirrored bedside chests from Wayfair.
We also needed some big lamps to place on top. And, they needed to be substantial enough with some texture to be anchored beside the big sleigh bed. I couldn’t find any I liked or in the price range I was willing to spend (two very important factors). So, I decided to make ’em!
You might be in the same pickle. Here is how I did it:
How To Make a DIY Rope Lamp [Easy]
Time: about 45 minutes per lamp
Lamp bases that are the size and shape you prefer (from Target)
Rope (from Home Depot)
Glue gun and lots of glue sticks
Step 1: Purchase materials.
I found these glass lamps at Target for $43. I liked their height and shape. (At the time of this post, they are on sale for $36.54 and a $10 off coupon code DECOR- making them $26.54!! A deal!)
I found Natural Twisted Sisal Rope from Home Depot for about $8-9 each. It took about 2 1/2 to wrap each lamp, so I purchased 5.
*Don’t forget to warm up your trusty glue gun and have plenty of glue sticks. It’s a mess. Be prepared for all the fuzzies that will come off the rope while working on it.
Step 2: Start on the back of the lamp where the cord comes out and hot glue the end of the rope. Apply a string of glue along the bottom of the lamp. Press the rope into it and hold for a few seconds to set. Continue this process to wrap the entire lamp. It is a bit time-consuming.
Step 3: When you get to the top of the lamp, glue the rope and tuck it in a bit.
Step 4: Repeat these steps on the second lamp. Winding, gluing, pressing in.
Step 5: Find a proportionally sized shade to crown the top. I like this linen floor lamp shade from World Market, and the proportion was perfect (yes, it is a floor lamp shade)! About $35 (unless you have a 10% off coupon found in mailables).
Cost: $65-75 each lamp + shade $35 = $100 each (approximately without any sale items)
I know that may a bit expensive. But to have a substantial, custom-made, unique DIY rope lamp lighting up my bedside, it is worth it!
Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions!
