Day 22: Living Small in the “What Ifs”

no what if

Just the other day, I was sitting in my girlfriend’s living room, feeling the warmth of friendship and yumminess of Trader Joe’s tiramasu,  and chatting about kids and life. Plopped on her yellow chevron poof, I was running down the crazy “what if” trail concerning my son’s safety:

What if my son does this…

What if that happens…

What if they don’t notice this…

Then, I’ll have to come rescue and…

Ever-so-lovingly-and-swiftly, my friend interjects,

No more “what ifs” for you!!!

Instead say: No matter what comes, I can handle it because God is with me!

Oh yes. She is that kind of friend.

Did you know that Moses had the VERY SAME dialogue with God at the foot of the burning bush? Let’s look at TWO big what ifs and how we can live small and avoid the windy and hopeless road:

#1 WHAT IF… I can’t do it?

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” Exodus 3:11

In the face of the task God has called YOU to do, what is your “what if”?

What if I can’t handle the burden of my son’s life-long, life-threatening disease?

What if I can’t carry this load of ministry that you have called me to?

What if I’m not strong enough to care for my husband or mother or daughter who has just been diagnosed with cancer?

What if…what if…what if…I can’t do it?

God had an answer for Moses. He has an answer for YOU:

And God said, “I will be with you.” Exodus 3:12

God says, He is BIG enough. No matter how small you feel, He is big enough. No matter how heavy the weight is on your shoulders, He is stronger. No matter how inept or incapable or under-qualified or weak or worthless, God is bigger than your limitations.  He has chosen you.  You don’t need to play out all the details. As the needs arise and the situations open up, He will walk you through it and strengthen you along the way.

#2 WHAT IF… I don’t know what to say?

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” Exodus 3:13

In the face of what God has called you to SAY, what is your “what if”?

What if those cute moms on PTO ask me questions about my church and I don’t know what to say?

What if my neighbor asks me why I don’t drink alcohol?

What if my son wonders why we have to go to church every Sunday?

What if my co-workers ask why I don’t join them for happy hour?

God had an answer for Moses. He has an answer for YOU:

God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

All of who God is is all you need to say. All that is loving, kind, strong, gracious, truth-filled, and right-on. Live small and humbly and He will direct you. Live small in Him and you will never say anything you will regret. And, He will always give you the right thing to say.

Don’t FEEL small and go down the road of “what ifs.” Instead, LIVE small and say, “No matter what may come, I can handle it because God is with me.”

Let’s say it again, “No matter what may come, I can handle it because God is with me.”

One more time just for kicks, “No matter what may come, I can handle it because God is with me!”

No more what ifs for you, my friend!
